Abstract Objective To study the effect of hydroxysafflor Yellow A(HSYA)on the salicylated-induced tinnitus. Methods Twenty-four mice were divided into three groups, which were given respectively normal saline (0.4 mL), sodium salicylate (400 mg/kg) and sodium salicylate combined with HSYA (20 mg/kg) by peritoneal injection (i.p.) one time a day for 3 days continuous. After 2 h of administration, the ratio of acoustic startle (AS) response amplitude was detected, and the background noise were 8 and 16 kHz narrow-band noise. Results The mice in sodium salicylate injection group showed obvious tinnitus-like behavior. At 16 kHz, compared with the sodium salicylate group, the amplitude of AS response of mice in the sodium salicylate combined with HSYA group was significantly decreased(P<0.05). Conclusion HSYA can effectively prevent tinnitus caused by sodium salicylate.
