A study on the correlation between migraine and right-to-left shunt by contrast enhanced transcranial Doppler (c-TCD)in the Yellow River Delta region |

Abstract Objective The association between RLS and migraine is still debated. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence and grade of RLS in he Yellow River Delta region patients with migraine and to evaluate the relationship between RLS and migraine.Methods Two hundred and sixteen cases of migraine patients and 127 healthy volunteers as control group using contrast enhanced transcranial Doppler ( c-TCD) or diagnosis of RLS and grade the positiverate of the two groups were statistically analyzed.Results In the case group,the positive rate of RLS was 47.2%(102 /216).In the control group,the positive rate of RLS was 22.8% ( 29 /127) .Comparison of two groups of the total positive rate,the total positive rate of case group was higher than the control group,there wasstatistically significant difference (P<0.001,χ2= 20.15) . Large shunt rate in case group was significantly higher than thecontrol group (P<0.001,χ2= 21.582) ,but the two groups of small shunt rate had no significant difference (P=0.231,χ2=1.430).Conclusion This multi-centre case-control study suggested that there is an association between RLS and migraine, especially when the shunt is large.
