Self-concept of profession of nurses in infectious ward from General Hospitals in Shandong Province and its influencing factors |

Abstract Objective To investigate the status and influencing factors of professional self-concept of nurses in infectious wards from some general hospitals in Shandong Province, and then to provide theoretical basis for improving their professional self-concept. Methods Totally 422 nurses from 20 general hospitals above grade 2 in Shandong Province were investigated by convenience cluster sampling,general data questionnaire and Professional Selfconceptor Nurses lnstrument (PSCNI).The effect of general data on professional self-concept of nurses in general hospital infectious ward was analyzed by variance analysis.Results The total score of professional self-concept of nurses in general hospital infectious ward was (88.06+9.85),and the average score of its items was (2.94+0.33),which tended to be positive.The score of skill dimension (3.28+0.48) was the highest while the score of communication dimension (2.72+0.38) was the lowest.Age,length of career, professional title,job satisfaction in the infectious ward and the intention of leaving the present position (F= 4.063,5.743,3.762,4.276,3.285,all P<0.05) affected the professional self-concept of nurses.Conclusion The professional self-concept of nurses in infectious ward in general hospitals could be improved in a large extent, although it is positive. Health administrative departments and hospital administrators should pay attention to optimizing the nursing working environment, implementing welfare benefits, improving career planning and management, and promoting the professional self-concept of nurses.
