Clinical value of autofluorescence bronchoscopy for the diagnosis of central airway lung cancer |

Abstract Objective To investigate the value of using autofluorescence bronchoscopy (AFB) for the detection of central airway lung cancer.Methods Totally 72 patients suspected of lung cancer were examined by AFB and white light bronchoscopy (WLB).All abnormal findings were recorded and biopsies were taken for pathological examination.Finally, the sensitivity and specificity of the two methods were compared.Results Among the 72 patients, 61 were classified as positive by pathology,including 3 severe dysplasia,19 small cell lung cancer and 39 non-small cell lung cancer which included 25 squamous carcinoma,11 adenocarcinoma and 3 without classification. AFB was used to detect 57 abnormal cases and 54 cases were pathologically confirmed as positive.WLB was used to detect 46 cases and 39 cases were confirmed positive.The relative sensitivity of AFB and WLB in the detection of central airway lung cancer was 88.5 % and 63.9 %, respectively,with statistical significant difference (P<0.05).The specificity was 78.6% vs 61.1 %, without statistical difference (P>0.05).Conclusion The sensitivity of AFB combined with WLB was better for the diagnosis of central airway lung cancer, especially helpful for the early diagnosis of lung cancer.
