Abstract Objective To study the effects of long-term hospitalization on the cognitive function in male patients with schizophrenia.Methods 30 male long-stay patients with schizophrenia ( inpatient group),32 male long-term follow-up outpatients with schizophrenia (outpatient group), and 26 healthy controls (control group) were assessed for cognitive function using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST),Spatial Span Test,Digital Sequence Test and The Tower Of London Test (TOL).Results The inpatient and outpatient group performed poorer on the entire neuropsychological test than health control group.The scores of inpatient group on every test were significant lower than control, except forward score of the Spatial Span Test.Conclusion Long-term hospitalization aggravates cognitive impairment in male patients with schizophrenia.
